Purpose

The Western Placer Waste Management Authority (WPWMA) recognized a critical need to educate Placer County residents on how to properly dispose of both household hazardous waste (HHW) and other materials. Despite having clear instructions on the WPWMA website, users often struggled to find or follow disposal guidelines. With improper disposal posing risks to both the environment and public health, WPWMA sought a solution that could simplify complex information and engage users of all ages.

Goal

Our primary objective was to harness Storytelling for Impact by designing and developing an interactive online game that would make learning about HHW disposal both enjoyable and memorable. This game needed to:

  • Demonstrate correct disposal methods for various household items.
  • Educate residents about the MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) and local drop-off options.
  • Promote community participation by emphasizing the convenience of free HHW drop-off services and providing a 24/7 guide on what belongs in the bin and what should be kept out.

Results

By weaving interactive storytelling elements with clear educational content, our team successfully launched the recycle game on WPWMA’s Placer Recycles website. The playful interface and straightforward navigation provided an easy way for users to understand correct disposal practices—whether for household hazardous waste, recyclables, or general trash. Additionally, the game offered direct links to location details, operating hours, and essential guidelines, making responsible waste management more accessible than ever.
